That being said, we recently learned that there is a very good possibility that an existing structure in Kabul might be made available to us, which would allow us to get an orphanage up and running much sooner than we anticipated. Granted, it would be a much smaller orphanage than we had originally planned, but it would allow our organization to start small. We've already had some organizations promise beds, desks, furniture, school supplies, etc. as soon as the orphanage is ready. Obviously, we would need to find staff and a security detail that we can trust, in addition to developing a curriculum that incorporates not only a basic education, but teaches the children life skills that will ease the transition to the world beyond their walls.
Layne Pace, our president, left for Afghanistan Friday to explore these options before us and to report back while he is there. To track his journey and progress, visit: http://layneafghantrip.
